Braces Care Guide: Maintaining Your Orthodontic Braces for Optimal Results
Brushing
Brush 'above' the brackets
Brush 'below' the brackets
Brush “above” and “below” the braces. Make sure you get close to the bracket edge as this is where a lot of plaque (germs!) gets trapped.
Take Note About Brushing!
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day. This helps to remove plaque and bacteria that accumulate on your teeth throughout the day and night.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, circular motions. Angle the brush at a 45-degree angle towards the gumline to clean both the teeth and the gums. Avoid using excessive pressure, as it can damage tooth enamel and irritate the gums.
- Use fluoride toothpaste to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. If you have specific dental concerns, such as sensitivity or gingivitis, consider using toothpaste formulated for those issues.
- Change your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become frayed. A worn-out toothbrush is less effective in cleaning your teeth.
- Use a tongue scraper or the back of your toothbrush to clean the surface of your tongue gently. This helps eliminate bacteria that can contribute to bad breath.
In Between the brackets
- For optimal braces care, use an interdental toothbrush to go “under” the wire to clean between the brackets, going as close as you can to the bracket edge.
Flossing
- Choose a floss specifically designed for braces, or use a floss threader to make the process easier.
- Thread the floss under the main wire of your braces.
- Gently move the floss between your teeth and braces, forming a C-shape around each tooth.
- Slide the floss up and down against the side of each tooth to remove plaque and debris.
- Repeat the process for every tooth, including the back teeth.
- Rinse your mouth to clear out any loosened particles and check in the mirror to ensure all areas are clean.
Mouthwash
- Avoid alcohol and use fluoride-containing mouthwash. Alcohol-free alternatives are painless for braces.
- Swirl a little mouthwash in your mouth and let it reach all regions, including brackets and wires.
- For optimal braces care, use mouthwash after brushing and flossing. This may help prevent cavities and promote fresh breath.
Other points to note
- Cut big chunks of food into smaller pieces before eating (e.g. slicing an apple instead of biting directing onto it)
- Avoid biting on very hard foods (e.g. ice)
- Avoid very sticky foods. Brush thoroughly after having sticky foods.
- Visit your GENERAL DENTIST regularly. You may want to go for cleaning more often when you have braces on.
